people :: kathy griffin

I like to think I helped discover Kathy Griffin. Eleven years ago, I stumbled across her half-hour comedy special on Comedy Central, and immediately, I was on the phone, calling all the gays I knew and telling them to turn it the f*&k on! I knew she was going to be the next big gay comedy icon.

Not many comedians these days make me laugh out loud. Kathy, after all these years, still does.

I loved her as Jerry Seinfeld's annoying acquaintence, Sally Weaver. I adored her as the acerbic Vickie Groener on Suddenly Susan. And when she told the world that Jesus could suck it, I though I was gong to crap my pants.

And Thursday nights in our house are sacred as we settle in for a cocktail hour of My Life on the D List. She deserved every opunce of that Emmy for this show, which is hysterical, poignant, and oddly off-center.

And some day, Kathy, I WILL have a cameo on your show as your stalker.

Some Kathy insights:

  • (About Clay Aiken) “Even the guys on Queer Eye are like, “that fag?”
  • “The day that Oprah opens a tabloid and she’s not in it is the day that everyone around her gets fired.”
  • “I want my own billboard. I think it should be a very beautiful, extremely airbrushed photo of me, and the quote should be “Suck It!” because that’s my inner thought bubble.”
  • (On Whitney Houston) “You know who was at her intervention? Courtney Love. Now let me tell you something, when Courtney Love is telling you you’re hitting the pipe too hard, that’s bad.”
